Fortified
churches in Transylvania
The Transylvanian villages with fortified churches provide a vivid
picture of the cultural landscape of southern Transylvania. The seven
villages inscribed are characterized by the specific land-use system,
settlement pattern, and organization of the family farmstead units preserved
since the late middle Ages, dominated by their fortified churches, which
illustrate building periods from the 13th to 16th centuries
